Orta İngilizce guerdon, guerdoun, gardone, o da fro guerdon, guerredon, guarredon, werdon, o da Orta Latince widerdonum (widerdōnum), o da *widerlonum (widerlōnum)’un değişmiş şekli, o da Batı Cermence (bu yüzden Eski Yüksek Almanca widarlōn, Eski İngilizce wiþerlēan), kelimesi kelimesine ‘geri ödeme’. İkinci bölümü Latince dōnum (hediye) kelimesinde asimile olmuştur.
